Statutory Sick Pay Explained

What is the SSP Rate?

For the 2024/2025 tax year, the standard rate for Statutory Sick Pay is £116.75 per week. It is paid by your employer for up to 28 weeks.

The "Waiting Days" Rule

Usually, you are not paid for the first 3 qualifying days (working days) you are off sick. These are called Waiting Days. SSP starts from the 4th day.

However, if you have been sick and claimed SSP within the last 8 weeks, the periods may be "linked", meaning you don't have to wait 3 days again.

Eligibility

To qualify for SSP, you must:

  • Be classed as an employee and have done some work for your employer.
  • Earn an average of at least £123 per week.
  • Have been ill for at least 4 days in a row (including non-working days).
